Job: Computer Games Professorship Position at Aalto University, Finland

The above-mentioned position is located jointly in the Aalto School of Art and Design’s Department of Media (http://media.taik.fi/) and the Aalto School of Science’s Department of Media Technology (http://media.tkk.fi/en/). This new post is expected to entail responsibility for development of the broad area of computer games within Aalto University. Finland’s contemporary game industry also provides a stimulating and innovative context within which future industrial collaborations are expected.

The tenure track position in Computer Games relates directly to the education and research in the two departments in the field of games and the successful candidate will be expected to take part in the departments’ research as well as to plan, develop and coordinate related education within the departments at both Masters and Doctoral level. Currently the two departments collaborate in several strategic areas of new media, including computer games. One purpose of the joint position is to enhance this cooperation.

We are seeking a professional designer for a faculty position with teaching duties in the “Game Design” course of studies. The position requires the appropriate artistic and design-oriented know how with demonstrated experience in large-scale game productions on the international level. Expected are substantial knowledge and practical experience within a
creative-technical development environment of digital games and interactive consumer applications. The majority of the following fields should be covered: level design, experience with Unreal Editor or similar level editors, lighting, 3D software, animation, scripting, and creation of interactive environments. Personal expertise may be in 3D design, animation, or level design, but all these fields shall be taught. The artistic-design competence will be evaluated by portfolio including work samples. The portfolio should include the usual exponents such as games, models, and videos on disc or digital data media (no exclusively online portfolios will be accepted), as well as a precise account of personal achievements. This is a fixed-term position for five years with an option for extension depending on the future development of the course of study.

The track “Entertainment Interfaces” offers researchers, developers, and designers a platform to present innovative ideas in the area of interactive entertainment with a focus on interaction in games and other entertainment products and to discuss design challenges and the evaluation of entertainment interfaces. The aims of the track are to strengthen the awareness of the relevance of user-friendly and innovative interfaces for entertainment applications in the research community and in the public, to encourage the research activities and the education in this field, and to foster the knowledge transfer between researchers and developers. We like to emphasize the interdisciplinary background of the “Entertainment Interfaces” track and welcome contributions from the areas of computer science, psychology, design and engineering sciences as well as contributions from developers and designers working in the field of interactive entertainment. The track will take place together simultaneously with the German HCI conference “Mensch & Computer 2011″ and the German Usability Professionals (UPA) track in Chemnitz. Attendees of the Entertainment Interfaces track will be able to join all other tracks at no extra cost.

The FDG 2011 Doctoral Consortium provides a supportive environment in which Ph.D. students can get early feedback on their research directions, both from fellow students and from experienced faculty in the area. The consortium is intended primarily for beginning Ph.D. students who intend to pursue a career in academia. Since the goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to enable greater number of new PhDs in the area, applications from students who are close to completing their PhD will have lower priority (or are discouraged).
