Call for Participation

The third annual ACM SIGGRAPH Sandbox Symposium on videogames calls for papers, panel proposals, and presentations. We are looking for work that describes or illustrates innovative research in videogame theory, practice, and criticism. Video games are a singular technological medium, comparable in cultural impact to the telephone, television or the Internet. What are the creative, technological, and commercial challenges facing this medium in the future? How do we relate great stories that leverage advances in technology? What is the continuing impact of this medium on individuals and society?

An Introduction to Game Studies: Games in Culture by Frans Mäyrä

SAGE Publications, 2008.

http://gamestudiesbook.net/

An Introduction to Game Studies is the first introductory textbook for students of game studies. It provides a conceptual overview of the cultural, social and economic significance of computer and video games and traces the history of game culture and the emergence of game studies as a field of research.

Key concepts and theories are illustrated with discussion of games taken from different historical phases of game culture. Progressing from the simple, yet engaging gameplay of Pong and text-based adventure games to the complex virtual worlds of contemporary online games, the book will guide students towards analytical appreciation and critical engagement with gaming and game studies.

Research Institute for Media Art and Design, University of Bedfordshire, Luton

June 7th 2008

Which ever title you select, ‘Consumer’, ‘Audience’,
‘Receiver’, Player’, ‘Operator’, or ‘Gamer’, the
fundamental issues remain the same in videogames: who
and what is the Operator? What role do Gamers play
within their communities or within their cultures? How
do Players situate themselves in a competitive or
casual environment and make sense of the game in light
of genre, reception and history? How is the game used,
culturally, socially and psychologically?

This conference aims to address the issues that
surround the Player of videogames as contributor and
consumer of specific cultures, not only through
presentation and discussion, but also through actively
engaging with games and Gamers. The President of
DiGRA, Professor Tanya Krzywinska, will provide the
keynote.

MIT Press has authorized what is probably one of the first blog-based peer reviews for a forthcoming book by Noah Wardrip-Fruin, digital media writer, artist, and professor of communication at the University of California, San Diego (http://grandtextauto.org/2008/01/22/expressive-processing-an-experiment-in-blog-based-peer-review/) . Every weekday over the next ten weeks, Wardrip-Fruin will post a section of his new manuscript, Expressive Processing: Digital Fictions, Computer Games, and Software Studies, on the popular Grand Text Auto blog (where he is a regular author)(http://grandtextauto.org/), with the hope of receiving quality feedback from the site's readers. The GTxA community represents a vibrant network of media scholars, artists, designers and gaming professionals who are perfectly suited to critique this inherently cross-disciplinary work. When Doug Sery, the editor at MIT, asked Wardrip-Fruin who would be the ideal reviewers for the manuscript, his first instinct was to somehow bring the process to the blog: "I immediately realized that the peer review I most wanted was from the community around Grand Text Auto."

Play: A two-day international, interdisciplinary conference hosted by the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh, May 23rd-24th.

http://forum.llc.ed.ac.uk/play/

You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. - Plato

Play is the exultation of the possible. - Martin Buber

What is play to the cat is death to the mouse. - German Proverb

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. - Jack Nicholson

Frivolous, serious, political, humorous, powerful: play permeates every aspect of contemporary culture and has become a central concern within the humanities, inspiring a variety of approaches and interpretations. When do we play, or perhaps, when do we not play? Is contemporary culture characterized by its playfulness? Have we always been playing? What are the social and cultural functions of play? Can play be political or must it always be frivolous? Is it a universal and intrinsic human activity? How do
different cultures play?

Future and Reality of Gaming (F.R.O.G.)
Vienna Games Conference, 17.-19. October 2008

Digital games have become a driving factor of contemporary cultural,
social, and economic development. They are enablers of global cultural
exchange and serve as entry points for media participation. However, the
cultural, social and economic significance of games usually remains
underestimated or misunderstood by the general public. In 2007, the City
of Vienna decided to host “Game City”, a high profile event bringing
together representatives of the games industry, non-profit
organizations, academia and the general public for the discussion of the
current state of computer games, digital youth cultures and games
research. One key element of “Game City” was the Vienna Games
Conference, which had the objective of serving as a public information
platform as well as an international networking event for game
researchers of various disciplines. Due to the overwhelming success of
this concept, the “Game City” event and the Vienna Games Conference will
be held again in the fall of 2008.

Which ever title you select, ‘Consumer’, ‘Audience’,
‘Receiver’, Player’, ‘Operator’, or ‘Gamer’, the
fundamental issues remain the same in videogames: who
and what is the Operator? What role do Gamers play
within their communities or within their cultures? How
do Players situate themselves in a competitive or
casual environment and make sense of the game in light
of genre, reception and history? How is the game used,
culturally, socially and psychologically?

This is an open invitation to a collaborative effort into mapping
digital play around the world. Currently only scattered information on
the popularity and forms of engagement with digital games in global
context exist. Often particularly in media statements are nevertheless
made that concern “all gamers”, even if researchers emphasise how both
games and playing takes multiple forms and claims about some particular
game or group of players do not necessarily apply to another. In the
spirit of the recent “Situated Play” conference (DiGRA 2007), we propose
a collaborative effort of collecting together research, observation and
data about forms of play around the world. See: www.gamescultures.org,
an open beta of wiki resource about global games cultures.

Last weekend the Values at Play research project launched its website, http://www.valuesatplay.org, which offers a wealth of game design ideas and scholarship about games and values. Valuesatplay.org has also begun accepting submissions for its Social Impact Game Contest. The Values At Play project, a collaboration between Hunter College’s innovative Tiltfactor Lab (http://www.tiltfactor.org) and New York University, is an inquiry into the ideas and belief systems latent in video games.

Call for Conference Organisers DiGRA 2009

Digital Games
      Research Conference 2009
www.digra.org | www.gamesconference.org

The Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA)
has as a central goal the support of an international conference on
digital gaming. Three world conferences have taken place, the first in
      Utrecht, the
      Netherlands
      (2003), the second in Vancouver,
      Canada (2005) and the
      third in Tokyo,
      Japan (2007).

This document is a call for proposals for a
committee and location to host the next of DiGRA’s international games
      research conference for 2009.

Institutions wishing to put themselves forward
should consider the following aims of DiGRA when putting their proposal
together and highlight how the event they would organise would achieve
      these:

To support digital games research as an
        interdisciplinary field

To encourage dialogue between researchers,
practitioners, commercial organisations and policy makers

To support digital gaming students and
        curriculum development

To disseminate work produced by the
        association’s community

DiGRA is keen to receive proposals that tackle
these issues in an innovative manner and build upon established conference
      practices.

It is envisaged that DiGRA conferences will each
have a central theme but that this will in no way compromise the
inclusiveness of research into digital gaming from a wide range of
researchers, disciplines and empirical domains. The official language of
      the conference will be English.

The Journal of Game Development is now accepting submissions.

The Journal of Game Development (JOGD) is a journal dedicated to the dissemination of leading-edge, original research, as well as the underpinnings that detail the most recent findings in related academic disciplines, hardware, software, and technology. This will directly affect the way games are conceived, developed, produced, and delivered. The research in the journal will come from both academia and industry.

Video games are objects, commodities, things. They are imagined, produced, purchased, unwrapped, played and re-imagined. At home, at work, on the train, video games are a part of everyday lives, as mundane as they are fantastic. It has already been argued that the study of video games as a topic is
nearly overwhelming in its timeliness and relevance; games have matured from the high-tech "do-it-yourself" hobby of technophiles to a dominant and pervasive sector of the worldwide entertainment industry, and in the process games have begun their inevitable contribution to contemporary anthropology.
