Natural and man-made disasters are recurrent on the planet, causing structural, economic and social damages. More particularly, Caribbean hurricanes originated in the Atlantic annually affect the lives of thousands of people. The damages caused by such events often exceed national coping capacities, requiring the aid of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to help the impacted population. Due to the stochastic nature of climatic disasters, humanitarian agents must be trained over diversified scenarios to improve their decision-making process, making links between past and new events. In this paper, we present a serious game that simulates Atlantic hurricane seasons and whose objective is to serve as a training tool for humanitarian logistics teams regarding disaster relief actions under time and resource constraints. We describe how the game is played, its features and learning objectives, the game design challenges and deployed solutions.

Serious Game Jam (SGJ) is one of the major events organized by DiGRA JAPAN every year since 2014. This study proposes a prototype SGJ operation manual. Although eight SGJ events have been organized so far, the first few events were conducted based on the manuals for a general game jam and the organizer’s experiences. However, considering the process of developing entertainment and serious games is different, an operation manual is required for organizers of SGJs.

2020 DiGRA ’20 – Proceedings of the 2020 DiGRA International Conference: Play Everywhere

Urban planning is a complex process that involves many different stakeholders and has a very long time frame. The United Nations' Declaration of the Rights of the Child states that children should be given the opportunity to express their views and that these should be respected. The complexity of the urban planning process poses challenges on how to involve children. This article presents Stadsbyggarna - a board game designed with the explicit goal to help children understand the nature of urban planning. It has been used in citizen dialog in the development of a new 30-year city plan in a mid-sized Swedish city. Nineteen school classes in the municipality have played the game. The result shows that the gameplay encourage urban planning discussions. Role-playing is identified as a key element of the game. The digital component initially planned to be included in the gameplay was however found to be superfluous.

Pervasive gaming has the potential of transforming the home into a persuasive environment in which the user can learn about appliances and their electricity consumption. Power Explorer is a mobile game with a special sensing approach that provides real-time electricity measurements and feedback when the user switches on and off devices in the home. The game was developed based on persuasive principles to provide an engaging means to learn about energy with positive and negative feedback and social feedback from peers on real energy actions in the home. We present the design and rationale of this game and discuss how pervasive games can be viewed from a persuasive and learning point of view.
