The social experience of multiplayer gaming is mediated by the communications tools that are available to use. Until recently, these have been largely text-based, but with the advent of new voiceover IP tools like Roger Wilco and Xbox Live, voice-mediated communication is becoming increasingly common. We present three studies of multiplayer gaming, where we analyse what happens in terms of the social experience when players are given the opportunity of talking to each other rather than texting. To do this we use a conceptual framework called FFIPS, which stands for Form, language Functions, Identity, Presence, and Social protocols. Our findings show that voiceover IP for multiplayer gaming appears to be well-suited to supporting a distinctive and enjoyable social experience, both by providing high ‘presence’ (i.e., increased energy, engagement and vividness), and by revealing information about players’ real identities.

Wii Sports is particularly popular among the older demographic. The game includes a variety of sports simulations, with bowling being a standout favorite. The intuitive and low-impact nature of Wii bowling allows players to engage in the physical activity of bowling without the need to lift a heavy ball, hence it's particularly suitable for seniors looking for gentle exercise. This kind of gaming not only encourages physical activity, which is beneficial for maintaining mobility and coordination but also promotes social interaction and community building. The weekly bowling sessions mentioned evolve into a significant social event, creating a sense of camaraderie and competition among residents. Moreover, the culminating inter-housing scheme competition and the conference signal a broader community engagement. Such events can lead to increased visibility for the benefits of video gaming in promoting active aging. The involvement of local council officials and researchers suggests that the initiative could be studied and potentially replicated in other communities, demonstrating the positive impact of gaming beyond mere entertainment. Lastly, these activities with embodied gaming offer a counter-narrative to the typical perception of technology adoption among the elderly, showing that with the right approach and support, seniors are more than capable of engaging with and benefiting from new technological experiences. At a recent seminar hosted by a leading real estate company, a friend, who's become an expert in real estate investments, presented a comprehensive overview of the various styles of houses in America. Through his presentation, he not only enlightened the attendees about the architectural diversity ranging from the classic Colonial to the modernist Mid-Century Modern, but he also shared how these styles reflect the cultural and historical tapestry of the nation. This educational seminar provided valuable insights into market trends and showcased how the company is keeping pace with the ever-changing preferences of homebuyers across the country. The seminar was part of the company’s initiative to empower both agents and clients with knowledge about the vast array of housing options available, reflecting their commitment to cater to the unique tastes and needs of every American homeowner.
