If we believe that play is a cultural universal, then game making probably is as well. At the same time, while contemporary games circulate globally they are obviously not created in a vacuum. Instead, they are importantly shaped by cultural, social, and geographical contexts and historical trajectories. While major differences in game design paradigms, game studio cultures, and regional game development scenes exist, the academic study of games has only begun to address these issues.

The Department of Humanities at Illinois Institute of Technology seeks a tenure-track assistant professor for a Fall 2018 appointment. The ideal candidate will complement the department’s core disciplinary areas: communication, information architecture; history; linguistics; media studies; philosophy and ethics; and science, technology, and society. Competitive candidates must demonstrate a research agenda that integrates digital media technologies and humanistic scholarship. AISB AI, GAMES & VIRTUAL REALITY 2018

The AI, Games & VR Symposium, acts as a meeting place for researchers and practitioners from academia, education and industry who are involved with the design, development and evaluation of AI in the context of games or virtual reality and any other form of immersive experience (e.g. 360 videos).

It focuses on the application of artificial intelligence or intelligent-like techniques, frameworks and theories to the creation of interactive engaging intelligent games.

It will address the following areas of research and practice:

  • The use of AI techniques (planning, learning, evolution etc.) in games, VR and the game/VR design process.
  • The design and engineering of AI components in commercial games, virtual environments, VR technology, Immersive experiences
  • AI for serious games, gamification, virtual environments
  • Automatic or semi-automatic procedural content generation
  • Intelligent or adaptive player interaction
  • AI for player/user analytics and modelling player/user behaviour or experience.
  • Agent pathfinding and decision-making in games and virtual reality applications
  • Using games or simulations as a platform for building intelligent agents
  • Environmental simulations for games/VR/immersive experiences

  • Player perceptions of game AI, VR AI, Immersive experience AI

Papers connecting games to all areas of computational intelligence and traditional AI are considered.

 

Job: Faculty Position (teaching) in Games at University of Utah

The University of Utah’s Entertainment Arts and Engineering program is conducting a faculty search this year for a teaching professor, open at all ranks. This position is non-tenured, but is intended to be a permanent position, with multi-year contracts. The position is focused on teaching, but research is a clear component of the job. EAE graduate and undergraduate programs are ranked in the top four worldwide by Princeton Review consistently since 2013. The EAE faculty includes artists, computer scientists, designers, games studies scholars, and social scientists who work together to design and teach our courses. This diversity of background in our faculty is one of the core elements of our students’ experiences.
