CfP: DeFragging Game Studies – DiGRA 2013 – August 26-29, Atlanta GA USA

The Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA) announces the Call for Participation for DiGRA 2013, to be hosted by Georgia Institute of Technology at the Georgian Terrace Hotel in Atlanta Georgia. DiGRA 2013 will bring together a diverse international community of interdisciplinary researchers engaged in cutting edge research in the field of game studies.

*Theme: DeFragging Game Studies*

This year’s proposed theme is a playful linguistic remix of the terms “frag” and “defrag.” Defragging is the computer term for reducing file fragmentation. Fragging, derived from the military term for killing a superior officer of one’s own unit, has become video game parlance for the temporary killing of another player.

In the early game studies community, a good deal of fragging (in all three senses) took place between various camps, schools of thought and disciplines. This included discussions as to whether or not game studies should split into more discipline-centered communities; however, the overall trend has been to continue to grow our field as an “interdiscipline” that includes humanities, social sciences and psychology, computer science, design studies, and fine arts.Borrowing from the computer engineering term, the theme for DiGRA 2013 highlights this process of defragmenting, which both embraces and better articulates our diverse methods and perspectives while allowing the game studies research community to remain a coherent and unified whole.

DiGRA 2013 will take place immediately proceeding Dragon*Con, America’s largest**multigenre fan convention .

Game Jams – energized, fast-paced get-togethers of developers and artists to make digital games – have emerged as a way to generate and provoke novel game ideas. To introduce the HCI community to this collaborative fast-paced approach to quick results, we will be holding a 2-day Game Jam that focuses on new physical interfaces. During this hands-on workshop, participants will collaborate with other researchers and practitioners across the CHI community to build games with novel physical interfaces. The workshop has three goals:

CfP: 7th European Conference on Games Based Learning (ECGBL 2013) , Porto, Portugal, 3-4 October 2013

This is a first call for papers for the 7th European Conference on Games Based Learning – ECGBL 2013 being held at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Porto, Portugal on the 3-4 October 2013.

This call will close on 14th March 2013.

The Conference offers an opportunity for scholars and practitioners interested in the issues related to GBL to share their thinking and research findings. Papers can cover various issues and aspects of GBL in education and training: technology and implementation issues associated with the development of GBL; use of mobile and MMOGs for learning; pedagogical issues associated with GBL; social and ethical issues in GBL; GBL best cases and practices, and other related aspects. We are particularly interested in empirical research that addresses whether GBL enhances learning.

In the first instance all submission types require an abstract. For more information please go to: http://academic-conferences.org/ecgbl/ecgbl2013/ecgbl13-call-papers.htm.

G|A|M|E – Game as Art, Media, Entertainment

The Games on Games project originates from the hypothesis that it is possible and fruitful to critique videogames and their related themes by adopting their own forms, mechanics and languages. The meta-referential intention to transpose scientific research from written word to the playing field opens up a range of different challenges, such as:
