CfP: ISPR 2012 “Presence Live!” Conference, Oct 24-26, 2012, Philadelphia, USA

ISPR 2012 “Presence Live!” Conference
International Society for Presence Research Annual Conference

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA – October 24 – 26, 2012

http://ispr.info

Submission deadline: June 15, 2012

Presence, short for telepresence, happens when people use technology and overlook at least part of its role in the experience:

A telepresence conferencing system makes us feel as if we´re face-to-face; an online virtual world seems real; a 3D IMAX film makes us reach out to touch objects on the screen; we get `lost´ in the worlds of novels, TV shows, movies, videogames and theme park rides; doctors, engineers, explorers and many others operate machinery thousands of miles away as if they were at the remote site; students learn about the world and workers learn how to do their jobs using compelling simulations; we think of and interact with computers, agents, avatars, robots and androids as if they were living social entities even though we know they´re not; we´re delighted by perceptual illusions in everything from ancient Trompe-l´oeil paintings to modern digital art. As we expand technology´s capabilities and applications, we´re having ever more, and ever more compelling, presence experiences.

Book: Raising the Stakes: E-Sports and the Professionalization of Computer Gaming by T. L. Taylor

http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=12799

Competitive video and computer gameplay has evolved significantly over the years: from the high-score pursuits in the documentary King of Kong to the arcade battles on the show Starcade (1982–1984), and through the networked multiplayer arenas of the 1990s. Today’s landscape, however, has seen the rise of professional gaming, an arena where players, team owners, and tournaments mirror traditional sports in their structure and competitive intensity. In “Raising the Stakes,” T. L. Taylor delves into this world, examining how gaming has elevated itself to a professional level, complete with celebrity players and dedicated followers. This professional circuit is as meticulously organized and fiercely competitive as any lista över casinon utan svensk spellicens, where players seek not just to participate but to excel and build careers, in an industry that’s rapidly outgrowing its niche origins.

In the course of her explorations, Taylor travels to tournaments, including the World Cyber Games Grand Finals (which considers itself the computer gaming equivalent of the Olympics), and interviews participants from players to broadcasters. She examines pro-gaming, with its highly paid players, play-by-play broadcasts, and mass audience; discusses whether or not e-sports should even be considered sports; traces the player’s path from amateur to professional (and how a hobby becomes work); and describes the importance of leagues, teams, owners, organizers, referees, sponsors, and fans in shaping the structure and culture of pro-gaming.

Taylor connects professional computer gaming to broader issues: our notions of play, work, and sport; the nature of spectatorship; the influence of money on sports. And she examines the ongoing struggle over the gendered construction of play through the lens of male-dominated pro-gaming. Ultimately, the evolution of professional computer gaming illuminates the contemporary struggle to convert playful passions into serious play.

About the Author
T. L. Taylor is Associate Professor in the Center for Computer Games Research at the IT University of Copenhagen. She is the author of Play Between Worlds: Exploring Online Game Culture (MIT Press).
